About the Midwifery ONE Education Program

Previously known as the WomanCraft Midwifery Education, the Midwifery ONE Education program is a completely updated program that utilizes the virtual learning environment to provide a strong structured student environment. There is a strong emphasis on core knowledge, systems thinking, critical thinking skills, and trans-disciplinary learning.

Our new name represents a long overdue shift towards a more inclusive form of midwifery education that values the diverse racial, cultural, geographic, and socio-economic backgrounds of students, supports families of all types, and that acknowledges that parents, birthing individuals, and those that care for them identify with many gender identities or sexual orientations.  Our mission is to create an welcoming, safe, equitable, inclusive, anti-oppressive, self-reflective program. Midwifery ONE is about taking the first step on your journey as an aspiring midwife.

Our Midwifery Education programs are designed to provide a strong academic foundation for aspiring midwives working on the PEP (Portfolio Evaluation Process) route of training to become a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) and for those not seeking certification that would like to build their midwifery knowledge base. Our program provides academic training based on the core competencies set forth by the Midwives Alliance of North America (MANA).

*Disclaimer* CPM requirements, and the PEP Process are regulated by the North American Registry of Midwives and change/update frequently. Students are encouraged to check NARM's requirements on a regular bass and educate themselves about both NARM regulations and the laws (or lack there of) that pertain to midwifery in the state they plan to practice in. Midwifery is regulated/unregulated differently in all 50 states. Please visit MANA for information on your state.

    TERMS TO KNOW
    Direct Entry Midwifery
Typically Direct Entry Midwives (DEM) attend women who seek to give birth at home. Midwives of this nature are usually deeply connected to their community and have strong ties with other parents, providers, and midwives within their community. A Direct-Entry Midwife is an independent practitioner. DEMs acquire their skills through apprenticeships with other midwives, self study, and/or through a structured midwifery school or program. Midwives are specialists in normal pregnancy, labor and birth. Direct entry midwives carefully screen their clients for risk factors and encourage them to seek physician backup when needed. DEMs also are trained to recognize complications and call for assistance when necessary. A Direct-Entry Midwife is trained to provide continuous quality care (see Midwifery Model of Care below) to healthy women and newborns throughout the childbearing years. CPMs are direct entry midwives but not all direct entry midwives choose to be CPMs.

Certified Professional Midwife-(definition courtesy of MANA -seehttp://www.mana.org)

A Certified Professional Midwife is a knowledgeable, skilled, and professional independent midwifery practitioner who has met the standards for certification set by the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM) and is qualified to provide the Midwifery Model of Care. The CPM is the only midwifery credential that requires knowledge and experience in out-of-hospital settings. (MANA, 2020)

Midwifery Model of Care(definition courtesy of MANA -seehttp://www.mana.org)

The Midwifery Model of Care is a fundamentally different approach to pregnancy and childbirth than contemporary obstetrics. Midwifery care is uniquely nurturing, hands-on care bore, during, and after birth. Midwives are health care professionals specializing in pregnancy and birth who develop a trusting relationships with their clients, which results in confident, support labor and birth. While thee are different types of midwives practicing in various settings, all midwives are trains to provide comprehensive prenatal care and education, guide labor and birth, address complications, and care for newborns. The Midwives Model of Care is based on the fact that pregnancy and birth are normal life events. The Midwifery Model of Care includes: monitoring the physical, psychological, and social well- being of the mother/birthing parent throughout the childbearing cycle; providing the mother/birthing parent with individualized education, counseling, and prenatal care, continuous hands-on assistance during labor and delivery, and postpartum support; minimizing technological interventions; and identifying and referring women/birthing people who require obstetrical attention. The application of this woman-centered model has been proven to reduce the incidence of birth injury, trauma, and cesarean section.(MANA 5/15/96)The application of this model has been proven to reduce to incidence of birth injury, trauma, and cesarean section. (MANA Midwifery Task Force, 2020)
